Gianni Schicchi is the only comic opera created by Giacomo Puccini. Together with the one-act operas Il tabarro (The Cloak) and Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica), it makes up a triptych. The opera combines vivid melodies with expressive recitatives.
The premiere took place on the stage of the New York Metropolitan Opera in December 1918 on the same evening as the other two parts of the cycle. Now the opera is included in the repertoire of the world’s largest opera houses.
The Opera Centre has planned the production of Gianni Schicchi, which was staged by the young director Mikhail Sabelev – a student of Rimas Tuminas and Ivan Popovski, laureate of the IV Nano-Opera International Competition for Young Opera Directors. A famous Italian maestro Marco Boemi, who has repeatedly collaborated with the Centrem, is its stage-conductor. Sets and costumes – by Irina Sid, who has designed sets for more than 20 performances in various Russian theaters. All parts in the opera are performed by the Opera Centre’s soloists.
