Galina Pokrovskaya was born in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod).

In 1973 Galina graduated from the Theater Studies Department of the Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music and Cinema.

From 1972 to 1994 she taught courses in history of theater and sources of Russian music at the Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory.

From 1973 to 1988 she directed the Literature Department of the Nizhny Novgorod Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Pushkin and was a deputy director at the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the All-Russian Theatre Society, director of the youth section in theatre critics.

Galina has released numerous articles, radio and television programs about the history of musical theatre. She is the initiator of the all-Russian festival for opera and ballet art called «Boldino Autumn».

From 1986 to 1989 she was a Professor of History of the Arts at the Nizhny Novgorod Academy of Management. From 1988 to 2002 she was a Secretary of the All-Russian playwrights’ laboratory of the Russian Federation Ministry of Culture. The program of the laboratory highlights festivals for children’s theaters in Russia and abroad.

In 1995 Galina started «The Moscow Debuts» festival. From 1997 to 2002 she edited two volumes of an encyclopedia on the Nizhny Novgorod region.

In 1996 Galina worked with director Anatoly Efros. After his death she prepared his archive for publication. From 1997 she also worked with director Pyotr Fomenko on the scenic editing for Tsar our dear Father and Guilty without guilt in the the Vakhtangov theatre and Le Cocu Magnifique in the Satirikon theatre.

From 2000 to 2005 Galina worked as a literature specialist and musical director at the Fomenko Studio Theatre. In 2003 – 2004 Galina worked on the series My Happiness (music for the film) filmed at Mosfilm.

Since 2002 Galina has taught singing diction at the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre.
