Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre opened the ‘War and Peace’ International Arts Festival at Sevastopol Mikhailovskaya Battery with its Boris Godunov opera production by Mussorgsky

1 June 2012

On June 1st Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre opened the ‘War and Peace’ International Arts Festival at Sevastopol Mikhailovskaya Battery with its Boris Godunov opera production by Mussorgsky. This unique festival combines various genres: military orchestras music, symphony classics, cinema, modern dance, photography and media-art. Moreover, Sevastopol city itself acts as the main character of the festival. The project gathers the most spectacular forms of art and combines them into a harmonious ensemble with the architectural and historical city space. One of the few surviving 19th-century fortifications, Mikhailovskaya Battery has for the first time become a unique operatic stage, and the soloists of the Centre performed in the open air for the first time too. It seemed that Crimean weather has been waiting for the opera, and the calm sea and clear starry sky has become the natural scenery that night. The auditorium for 1200 people, located in the historic landscape, could not accommodate everyone. Sevastopol citizens listened to the great opera with a genuine interest and literally holding their breath. The lasting ovation and shouts of ‘Bravo!’ have become the sign of the highest audience appreciation.
