5 February 2011

On February 5, the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre opened the 18th All-Russia Pushkin Theatrical Festival in Pskov with a performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.

The Pushkin Theatrical Festival has been held in the Pskov Region since 1994. Over the past 17 years, productions based on works by the poet have been performed there by more than 120 theaters from Moscow, St. Petersburg and numerous other Russian cities and from Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Present at the gala opening of the festival were Alexander Golyshev, chairman of the Pskov Region Committee on Culture, Sergei Makryashin, deputy director of the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre, and Vladimir Retsepter, head of the Pushkin Theatrical Centre in St. Petersburg.

Olga Rostropovich, president of the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation, brought greetings from Galina Vishnevskaya.

“Dear Friends,
“I am pleased to greet the participants and organizers of the 18th All-Russia Pushkin Theatrical Festival. It is impossible to imagine Russian culture without artistic celebrations such as this, which carries on the beautiful traditions of provincial Russia, in the best sense of that term. The land of Pskov as described in ancient chronicles will always be connected with Alexander Pushkin, the great genius whose name we all worship. I made my debut at the Bolshoi Theater as Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, and in the same role I bid farewell to the Opera de Paris. I am very happy that I can pass to my students, who are today opening the Pushkin Festival, my love for the great poet.
