The premiere of the musical performance “Marriage and the other horrors” dedicated to the 200th anniversary of N. Gogol

6 November 2008

Opera centre opened its 7th theatre season on the 6th of November with the performance dedicated to the 200th N. Gogol anniversary.
The creators of this performance named their work very bravely «Marriage and the other horrors» and identified it’s genre as «phantasmagoria», which means very daring, bold, audacious fantasy and play of imagination, fanciful, intricate interweaving and interlacing of topics and stories.
It is a wide and brilliant panorama of «the operas upon Gogol» – «Sorochinzy Fair» and «Marriage» by M. Musorgsky, «The Chistmas eve» and «The may night» by N. Rimsky-Korsakov, «Cherevichki» by P. Tchaikovsky, «Nose» by D. Shostakovich.
«We consider this play as experiment the educational theatre can not exist and develop without, – the artistic director of Opera Centre Galina Vishnevskaya says, – and the classical opera united with Gogol’s artistic literary world are really unique. Russian composers were fascinated by Gogol’s fantasy, fairy tales, stories, images – that’s no coincidence. They used even the same plot for composing different operas: for example «The Chistmas eve» by Rimsky-Korsakov and «Cherevichki» by P. Tchaikovsky … The great, terrific creative capacities are opening up for the young singers in this space of music indeed».
The Public and the musical community appreciates this new performance – the evidence are the long applause, a lot of flowers and congratulations. The accomplished premiere was a success and the creators of “Marriage …” hope for it’s long and interesting theatre life.
