Concert was held by personal initiative of Galina Vishnevskaya whose best roles in Bolshoi Theatre were performed in creative collaboration and under the direction of A. Sh. Melic – Pashaev in the period 1953 – 1964. “I started to work with Melic Pashaev at once I came to Bolshoi Theatre. What a conductor he was! He made a first production of Beethoven opera “Fidelio” in Russia. For the main part Leonora he chose me… I became his favorite singer. I had been working with Maestro for 12 years. Such a people I happened to meet in my life. This is my only privilege given me by God” (from memoirs of G. P. Vishnevskaya).
National artist of USSR Alexander Shamilievich Melic-Pashaev was born on October 23, 1905 in Tbilisi. He had been working in Bolshoi Theatre more than 30 years. Since 1931 he worked as a conductor and in the period 1953 – 1962 as a principal conductor. Among his best performances there are a numerous masterpieces of Russian and foreign opera classic: “Fidelio” by L. Beethoven, “Othello”, “Aida”, “La Traviata”, “Falstaff” by G. Verdi, “Ruslan and Ludmila” by M. Glinka, “The Queen of Spades” by P. Tchaikovsky, “War and Peace” by S. Prokofiev, “Ledy Macbeth of Mzensk Uezd” by Shostakovich, “Francesca da Rimini” by S. Rachmaninoff and many others.
