The Opera Centre offers a concert marking Galina Vishnevskaya”s 50th Bolshoi debut anniversary

27 December 2002

The wonderful family of Galina Vishnevskaya and Mstislav Rostropovich, their daughters Yelena and Olga and their six grandchildren in tow, have had their first-ever family reunion here in Russia to celebrate the New Year 2003. They were joined by the world-renowned diva’s many students and fans in an anniversary concert held at the Opera Centre of her own name.
Valentin Berlinsky, Zurab Sotkilava, Alla Demidova, Boris and Naina Yeltsin, other stage celebrities, politicians and diplomats all came to congratulate the great singer who was at once touched and buoyed by that outflow of unaffected love and admiration showered on her that night. The gala concert also featured such good old friends and admirers as the Bolshoi Theater’s lead singers Makvala Kasrashvili and Badri Maisuradze, Ilze Liyepa, Nani Bregvadze, members of the Gelikon Opera and, of course, her students. There was an improvised photo exhibition set up in the lobby capturing Galina Vishnevskaya in her best-loves roles of Tatyana, Leonora, Violetta, Aida, Tosca and Marfa. The festive and, at the same time, warm and confidential atmosphere reigning that night, against the backdrop of lush floral tributes and Christmas-tree decorations, came as a wonderful present to all.
