The festive opening of the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre in Moscow can justly be regarded as a unique event in the modern history of opera in Russia. The Centre, which is situated in a fashionable and picturesque street of Ostozhenka, near the Kremlin and Christ the Savior Cathedral, is a unique cultural and educational facility. The best young opera singers together with vocal tutors, conductors and directors improve their mastery to perfection so that to present the Russian operatic art on the international stage.
Within the past 11 years since the Opera Centre’s opening, it has gained a special role in the cultural landscape on Moscow. Since its opening the Centre has staged ten opera performances: “The Tsar’s Bride” by Rimsky-Korsakov, Gounod’s “Faust”, Verdi’s “Rigoletto”, “Vampuka” by Erenberg, “Iolanta” and “Eugene Onegin” by Tchaikovsky, Bizet’s “Carmen”, “Boris Godunov” by Mussorgsky, “Ruslan and Lyudmila” by Glinka and a musical performance “The Marriage and Other Horrors” after Nikolay Gogol; there have been held numerous chamber concerts, all highly appreciated by the audience and critics.
The stage of the Opera Centre, according to the musical audience, has become one of the best theatrical locations in Moscow. Not only Galina Vishnevskaya’s school students perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, musical festivals and theatrical productions also take place here. A gorgeous hall in the Italian style for 350 seats, equipped with modern lighting and sound systems, make it possible to organize most exclusive projects. The principal task of the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre is to perpetuate Russia’s great operatic traditions and to cause Russian opera to be perceived anew.
